Ratanakiri Province is situated in the Northeastern region of Cambodia and is home to numerous minority groups and indigenous peoples. Many of the provinces’ inhabitants are Brao, Kreung, Kachok, Jarai, Tampoun, Kavet and Lao with each forming a unique society. Ratanakiri Province is also abundant in natural resources including, timber and
non-timber products, extractives, and includes both the Srepok and Sesan River, two of the largest tributaries of the Mekong River. Indigenous communities living along the Sesan, Srepok, and Sekong (3S) Rivers traditionally depend on the natural resources of these rivers for their livelihoods, food sources, and cultural practices. These communities, which are located in remote areas and have limited access to socio-economic services, often suffer from human rights violations and environmental degradation, and have yet to fully participate in the processes of development.
