A total of 9 dams are currently being planned for the Sesan and Srepok Rivers in northeastern Cambodia alone, while a further 14 dams on the Sesan and Srepok Rivers are either in a state of operation or under construction upstream in Vietnam. Of the dams planned for Ratanakiri Province, China’s Guangxi Guaguan are responsible for 2 projects,

Vietnam’s ENV are also responsible for 2 projects, while South Korea’s KTC Cable Co. are negotiating 4 of the hydropower projects. The remaining project, the Lower Sesan 2 dam, is planned to start being constructed later this year, in 2011. This potentially devastating project is of major concern to the local community. These emerging needs of impending development of the Lower Sesan 2 dam and Lower Srepok 3 and 4 dams present an ever-important need for a mobilized and prepared community.
