Community-based Organisation (CBO)

Outputs from 3SPN’s 3-year strategic planning process identified a need and desire for the organisation to move towards more community ownership. 3SPN were committed to undertaking steps in 2010 to develop and begin to transfer more community ownership and continue to build the capacity of community members whilst starting to organise and setup on 3S community’s own strategic plan for short and long term actions through organising local dialogues amongst community leaders and representatives.

3SPN’s Annual Reflection Retreat for 2010 took place in Batambang Province and included a study tour visiting 2 organisations which allowed 3S community representatives to learn more about;

  • CBO establishment,
  • Community Fishery, and
  • Research and Documentation.

The trip was for a total of 6 days including travel and was joined by 37 people (10 women) including District Focal People and 3SPN staff.

3S Community responses on the study tour:

“Now we understand that there must be cooperation and communication between local community and authority for success of the CBO and our (advocacy) projects”

“We need to strengthen cooperation with authority.  Sharing information is also important – especially speaking out.  If we have better cooperation with authority we can have better advocacy results”

“We want to do it ourselves (speak out) because we are the people affected by the impacts, but we have limited capacity”

“Now we have connected with these networks I understand we must have more community ownership in our work”
